Miami Airport - 29 large suitcases, 14 carry-on and 14 "personal bags". |
Do you ever see those people in the airport with all the luggage and you wonder...why on earth would they need all that? We are those people!
 |
Team leaders and happy flyers, Sharon & Martin |
The teamwork begins in the airport, as we all work together to get an enormous amount of luggage through the check in process. Each checked bag weighs 50lbs, not to mention we often put extra heavy small items in our carry-on and "personal bags". All this to get as many supplies as possible to Haiti.

We are the people you never want to get behind in line :( |

Packing up the van for 3 hour drive to Haiti Arise |
This is the
airport parking lot, and all that luggage has to get to Haiti Arise. These 50lb bags are tossed to the top of the
van effortlessly by (no not us) the Haitians hired to assist us. No space is wasted. The load is tied up with a variety of rope
and then all of us plus a driver pile in. Dave and Monique got to ride shotgun or as hood ornaments as they
describe it. They were able to capture
some great pictures and video from this vantage point. Many positive changes were noticed since we
were here last year. There is less
garbage and rubble, more solid cement structures and the roads are in better
repair. Livestock dots the landscape, with
lots of pigs and goats, and some cattle.
The BBQ in the wheelbarrow caught our attention. This fellow appeared to be cooking a stew. On top of another vehicle we saw a fellow and thought he was filming a movie,
but then we realized he was just getting a ride on top of frozen boxes of food and enjoying a cool ride through town. Saturday was a tiring day, from travel to
unpacking and starting to set up the clinic. We were happy to tuck into our bunk beds, cozy under mosquito nets.

Maternity kits, ready for soon to deliver Haitian mothers. |
Aside from
medical care, we like to pay special attention to the expecting mothers and
provide delivery packs. There are many
jobs in a medical clinic and one is keeping good files. Dakota and Ceiligh worked hard putting the
file folders in order.

Everyone arrives for 8am Church service. |
Sunday
breakfast was boiled eggs, the typical Haiti bread and fresh fruit. The fruit is delicious; today we enjoyed
bananas and oranges. Church is bright
and early, 8am! We joined at least 250 adults
and 50 children for the service. Much of
the service was translated into English, and we found the sermon relevant and
enlightening. Church was also a time to
meet up with many of our friends from the 2013 mission.

The afternoon
saw us back at the clinic for more sorting and preparing of clinic rooms. It will be an early bedtime again tonight, as
we expect to care for over 100 people tomorrow.

ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your journey! You are all putting the word to work, not by telling people about Jesus, but by LOVE you have for all the people you are helping.
